Myth
The Great Kingdom of Japan has always been divided into smaller kingdoms, and these kingdoms have never really had peace. However, around 50 years prior to the main story this myth covers, it was decided that all future conflicts would be resolved through a sport. A sport that would eventually come to be called basketball.

Taiga Kagami is an outsider to the concept of winning wars with the game, but he's no stranger to playing it. He grew up playing it with his sister, Alex, and his brother Tatsuya, when he lived in America. But he heard rumors, both of the strange way Japan chose to resolve its conflicts, and a particular group of young people, known as the Generation of Miracles, who were all moved from their home town when they came of age to add their prowess to the various towns of the land.

Each town has a team. These teams then assemble in tournaments to decide who ranks the highest in all of Japan and depending on their ranking, their standing in the country overall changes. The idea behind this was to keep everyone focused on their teams and try to support their glory. And the team members could gain glory this way and it felt like there was a cause! Even if it was sort of a silly cause, and honestly the whole thing feels a little dystopian.

But Taiga returns to Japan, picking a random town to pledge his power to. As it turns out, this town is newly established in this tournament play, and it's only through a member of the Generation of Miracles, choosing to play for the same minor team, that he is able to succeed at all.

For a while, these two young men's teamwork was enough, but the matches began to take their toll, and the first time Seirin loses (against Touou, to a man named Daiki Aomine, who was the first one to accuse Kagami of not being enough of a hero, of not being able to work well enough with Kuroko), something in Kagami's brain just snaps. It's only with a great deal of effort from the rest of their team that they're able to bring him back to relative normalcy, and for a while, everything seems well.

But when they enter the Winter Tournament (beating Touou, first things first), the stress of the matches begins to be too much, and after three more (beating Kirisaki Daiichi and Yosen, but then losing to Kaijou), it proves to be too much, and the strange berserk quality that had entered Kagami killed him. It was really Yosen that created the most trouble for him— having to go up against his brother, Tatsuya, who had said that no matter what, they would no longer be brothers after the match. That is what killed his focus, what really allowed the insanity to seep in, what destroyed Taiga Kagami.

And it's such a shame, because he really could have been a hero.
