( CHARACTER INFORMATION )
Name/Work Name: Kagami Taiga/Kumo
Canon: Kuroko no Basket
Canon Point: 203Q (directly after defeating Kaijou, but before hearing the Teikou story)
AU/CRAU: Nope, straight from canon here!
Age: 16
History: Here!
Personality: What probably had the greatest impact on Kagami in his young life was meeting Himuro Tatsuya and Alex Garcia-- his brother figure and mentor, respectively-- at a time in his life when he was just struggling to make a friend. It was through both of them that he learned to love basketball so much, and for a while, the three of them existed as a sort of 'basketball family', even though it wasn't like Kagami was orphaned or anything of that sort. Eventually, though, it went a little sour, although Kagami always held onto it, and eventually Himuro left for Japan and Kagami thought he'd never see him again.
However, that isn't really the main thrust of Kagami's story. The main thrust of Kagami's story begins when he enters Seirin High, as the overenthusiastic monster rookie of a power forward, who fast becomes a starting player and, with Kuroko, the key to Seirin's winning strategy for much of the manga. He starts out wanting to just beat the Generation of Miracles (something that Kuroko promises to him, even though Kagami is a little skeptical and just thinks he's pathetic, at first), but along the way it becomes less about pure rivalry and more about trying to help Kuroko on his own quest to defeat his former teammates, and learns to appreciate his own team and maybe even resolve some of the leftover tension between him and Himuro along the way (even if it got slightly sidelined).
But who is Kagami Taiga? As I've already said, he's a power forward, Seirin's "ace", and he has the fiery, domineering personality to match it, at least at first. He's huge and intimidating, and he's great at basketball, as long as he isn't overworking himself into an injury. He's often described as having a potential so vast that it can't actually be visualized, and much of Kagami's problems in the series stems from the fact that he doesn't know how to harness it, and his coach and teammates don't have a very good idea of how to help him harness it, either. A lot of the series is also spent on Kagami trying to prove himself, through sweat and (literally, at some points) blood, to the Generation of Miracles, that he's worthy as a challenger to them. And for the most part, so far, that's worked. He has a sort of desperate drive forward, despite his prodigal amount of skill, which is usually presented as a contrast to the rest of the Generation of Miracles. He's incredibly earnest, and this comes across in more than how he plays basketball.
But despite his intensity, Kagami is still essentially a bit of a dork. He's deathly afraid of dogs due to an incident back in America, and he's also scared of ghosts. He's also not all that smart, schoolwise, and he tries to make metaphors to get his team psyched up but his team just finds them more amusing than inspiring. He's well-meaning but he's stubborn, and he clashes with nearly everyone he meets and he's not very good at learning when to stand down. But he is absolutely a memorable person, and his presentation does, eventually, get more people to believe in him, even those members of the Generation of Miracles who all thought he was a joke, at first.
Debt: I think what would drive him to work here would actually be to resolve his relationship with Himuro, moreso than to win against Rakuzan in the finals. Because he trusts his team enough and their work that they can win (which is a development! or at least I think he'd trust his team less earlier on), but now he just wants to fix his own stuff. If that's not enough, then maybe something about the ability to carry through on Midorima making him promise to help Akashi before the match.
Suitability: I think he's willing to work for it because he's really determined to make this work. Kagami has never been one to shy away from working hard— he trains incredibly hard all by himself just for the Winter Cup in order to not let down his team. So he'd be willing to do it— even though he'd probably have a little trouble with the whole set-up for a little while just because he isn't really a service oriented guy, and tends to be blunt and rude.
Previous Game Info: Not applicable!
Inventory: Kagami wouldn't have much on him— just his school uniform, the ring that Himuro gave him when he was a kid, and his cellphone. He'd probably only really care about getting the ring back, though, and maybe some of his casual clothes.
Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Kagami has two major talents: his basketball and his stomach. His basketball is most distinguished by his ability to jump— and his cultivated "animal instinct", which enables him to play mostly on intuition alone. He also really is known for his insatiable appetite— but at least he can feed himself, since he had to learn how to cook while he was living by himself. His strengths as a person are mostly that he's dependable and driven to work hard— he isn't even all that aware of his genius, but he does take his natural abilities for granted, to the point where he works too hard, sometimes. He can also be very stubborn in his first impressions of people— even if he can come around sometimes.
And he hates dogs, although at least he has a good reason for that.
